Org. Setting and Reporting

This Internship is located in the Justice and Corrections Service (JCS) of the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions, Department of Peace Operations (DPO). JCS supports the implementation of rule of law, justice and corrections mandates of United Nations peace operations. The JCS Internship is for an initial period of three months, with an opportunity for extension up to six months, depending on the needs of the Service.


The internship is UNPAID and full-time.


Interns are required to work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority the Intern will be required to perform the following:


- Assist with routine administrative tasks related to the work of the Justice and Corrections Service (JCS) and its support to the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) and the Department of Political Affairs (DPA)-led peace operations world-wide;

- Process incoming and outgoing correspondence and assist with the organization of official travel;

- Input, manage and track large quantities of data related to justice and corrections experts nominated for service with UN peace operations;

- Assist in organizing conferences and meetings;

- Assist desk officers in supporting specific peace operations, with research and other related tasks;

- Organize and coordinate meetings with Permanent Missions;

- Accompany JCS staff to meetings with delegates from Permanent Missions, to meetings with other Secretariat offices and to sessions of the Security Council, General Assembly and other multilateral meetings;

- Assist with note-taking and writing summaries/action points of internal and external meetings;

- Assist with the preparation of public information/ social media material, presentations and documents for senior JCS staff members;

- Perform any other functions as requested by the supervisor.

-Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients' environment to keep informed and anticipate problems

-Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects - Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:


- Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or

(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;


- Be computer literate in standard software applications;?Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship position fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
